Financial Hardship

March 10th 2020

It is paramount that no one is ever harassed to pay a debt, particularly those who might be coping with financial hardship.

Fortunately councils and other organisations offer flexible repayment arrangements for anyone who is experiencing difficulty. They also offer what is known as a ‘financial hardship’ arrangement or provision, if this is not offered at first instance, then we recommend asking for the option and/or seeking the assistance of a financial counsellor.

Apart from giving some comfort and certainty about the debt being dealt with on fair terms, it is widely accepted by debt recovery professionals that legal action should not be instigated against a person who has established that they are in financial hardship. We understand the stress that any threat of legal action can add to what is often a very tough situation. This is why litigation is always a last resort. There are many steps along the way, and entering into some sort of repayment agreement or seeking assistance through a financial counsellor will avoid matters spiralling out of control.
